Designing for the game
"Slimerge" is a mobile clicker and merge game, where you collect as many slime points as you can, by spawning and evolving your slimes.
The goal was to feature different sets of slimes, inspired by diverse themes. We wanted a simple and extremely cute representation of them.
Concept
No outlines, smooth shading. That was the style I had in mind.
The initial designs lacked the "Aww" reaction from people, so I searched for the necessary changes to overcome that.
Iterations
I discovered that a top-down perspective that makes them look a bit squished improves the "Aww" factor by a lot. I then changed the shading to match the new perspective and made it more subtle. The colors are more saturated in the new designs and some eye sets have changed.
The desire to squish is high, which is what I wanted to achieve through these designs.
Final Designs
All simple slimes evolve through different themes. The eyes are the one detail that connects the original to it's evolution. I matched the body of the slime with the expression that felt most right for it.
