Deciding on a style
The initial concepts for the characters featured a more detailed and photorealistic style. However, the desired feeling was more joyful and enchanting, so I switched to subtle shading, round shapes and bold lines.
Character Concepts
Since the game concept views the evolution of the mushroom character, I explored two evolution alternatives in my design.
The ladybug's predators are meant to be big and threatening. I designed three such characters, based on real life predators of ladybugs.
The game concept features quite minimalistic animations, mainly composed of key poses. I sketched out such poses for both the mushroom and the ladybug.
Environment Concepts
I sketched out the environment elements I would need in the creation of diverse locations. I wanted various types of bushes and mushrooms to populate the fantasy world with.
I drew inspiration from Moebius works which feature forest environments and researched a lot of mushroom types to base my designs off of.
Final Designs
While some designs have stayed the same, others have changed as I was working on the project.
For my first time doing concept work and working digitally, I am extremely happy with what this experience has taught me and would be more than excited to bring the game concept to life.
